Are we really going to college to learn or are we going for a piece of paper? Sure you learn things, but do the things we learn in college really prepare us for the jobs we will have in the future?

Unfortunately, I think some people are going to college simply to get a piece of paper. "Do the things we learn in college really prepare us for the jobs we will have in the future?" Well... I think that when it comes to certain things college does prepare you for future jobs. But, when you are finally out in the "real world" there are few jobs that are going to be exactly like what you learned about in college. I think that getting hands-on experience is more important than any time you can spend listening to lectures or reading textbooks. Having a degree does not mean that you are smarter than someone with no degree and many years experience in the same field. It does mean that you might get a better job than that person. I think this is what fuels the desire for most people that go to college.
Our business society has now opted for a system of degrees and certifications, to weed out applicants. Almost all the applications that you submit over the internet are "Screened" before they reach the human resources department. Even though you have years of Hands-on experience; that means nothing to an autonomous posting system that only looks for specific degrees or certifications. If it does not find these items, your application is not even read.
I spent six months looking for a job after being rifted for a 15 year technical position. I did not have a degree, as I opted to go directly into the workforce from High School. I feel this was a mistake on my part. Even thought I have years and years of experience, that meant nothing without that little piece of paper.
I think that experience is more. But that is not the case. I know first hand, that having a degree does not mean you will do well at a job. I have several degrees and only one of them has been a help to me. And it was not a help in the job field that I chose. So I went back to school and got another degree. This one is a specialized one and it helps tremendously. So when I put my school information on an application, it is hard for me to accept a position just because I have certain schooling behind me.
