I think that one of the problems people have these days is that they have lost that sense of community. With cell phone, texting, 45 minute commutes and email we live in such large spaces. In some ways these new inventions have brought people together but at the same time we seem to have little use for community or the folks immediately around us.
Somehow we need to regain that feeling that we have an obligation to contribute to our community. We have such a tendency to sit back and say why doesn't somebody do something about that instead of saying what can I do to help.
We're so afraid of paying taxes because we may be contributing to something that doesn't benefit us directly. Taking care of the schools should be everyone's number one priority. Why in the world would anyone have the mentality that they will always vote against a school levy? It is your duty as a citizen to determine when they are needed and when they aren't. Always saying no is just being lazy.
People are just so selfish. They know certain stores are bad for small business but they will go there anyway. They know that suburban sprawl is bad for cities but they continue to build farther out and abandon existing structures. Privately owned resturants are hurting but they go to the chains.
Of course these things aren't true of everyone. There are folks out there that work hard for their community. But we need to teach our kids that they have a responsibility to contribute and be a part and get involved.
We Need to Care!
