I recently had occasion to check into the CATS bus system for a family member who needed transportation to work. Learned a lot. It's free! That's amazing, even though the route is limited. It could be a godsend for some people, a budget friendly alternative for others. Except for one problem.
The bus runs between Fairborn and Xenia -- mostly via Dayton Yellow Springs Road. A portion of the route stops near Main Street and runs through the Broad Street Business District, by the Post Office and Senior Citizen Center, loops over to Maple, then proceeds down Dayton Yellow Springs Road. It makes a stop at Fairborn High School.
The next logical stop should be Krogers, right? People without private transportation need to buy groceries and they need to get to fast food jobs. Well, the high school is as close as you can get! The .8 mile walk from there is largely without a sidewalk. I called the CATS office to find out why.
Learned there used to be a stop there. Then, all the businesses along that stretch refused to allow the bus to pick up passengers on their property due to "insurance liability issues". Apparently that was such a popular destination site that groups of people waiting were seen to pose a threat. So now the business's bottom line is enhanced while those that must get to work or eat have to risk their life walking along a busy highway.
Fairborn needs to work with Greene County/CATS to resolve this problem and find a location for a bus stop at Kroger's
